Pest Control for Borers in Horticulture Plants

There are several ways to reduce the risk of insect borers in your horticulture plants. Proper horticultural practices can help minimize insecticide drift and other environmental concerns, while biological control methods can lower management costs. Insect borers

The most common form of insect control for borers is chemical control. Unfortunately, few effective insecticides have been registered for this purpose, and many older chemicals have been withdrawn from the market. Chemical management is usually justified only for newly transplanted trees, or for high-value ornamental trees. Most registered pesticides for woodborers are residual insecticides, which kill both adult woodborers and early larvae. A trunk injection is used to apply these compounds.

Insect borers are known to feed on the bark, trunk, and branches of shade trees. These insects are members of several insect families and are often attracted to weak plants. These insects are considered secondary invaders, as they often indicate other issues with plant health, contributing to the decline of trees. This is why professional pest control is important. Insect borers can damage a variety of plants, including shade trees, fruit trees, and pecan trees.

Signs of a wood borer infestation

There are various signs of a wood borer infestation, such as holes, stains, and frass. Frass is a mixture of excrement and wood fragments that can range from fine to coarse. Borers can also create a wood void known as a gallery, which can be difficult to see. Borer adult beetles will leave behind dead or infested larvae.

These borers also lay their eggs in lumberyards and new home construction. Once the infestation has started, it's difficult to control. The best solution for controlling wood worms is prevention. Fortunately, pesticides and other treatments are available for both types of beetles.

Borers can cause extensive structural damage. Depending on the species, they can cause large, circular holes in wood, often oozing sawdust-like frass. Identifying wood boring insects will help you to prevent further damage. Signs of a wood borer infestation can be difficult to detect, so you should contact a pest control professional as soon as possible. There are many ways to identify wood borers, including identifying the larvae that feed on softwood.

Treatment options

Recreational Fishing Spots at Durras on the South Coast of NSW, Australia

Durras, near Batemans Bay on the south coast of NSW, is a popular fishing destination for both the serious recreational fishermen or a family on holiday just wetting a line. NSW North Coast Travel Guide

The most popular fishing spots can be broken down into three areas:

Durras Lake. Just a short walk from the caravan parks in either Durras North or South Durras. Flathead and bream are mostly caught just off the boat ramps. If you have a small boat, kayak or canoe, there are four square kilometres of lake to fish in. Durras Lake is part of the Batemans Marine Park and there are two sanctuary zones. Durras Beach is 4km long stretching from Point Upright in the north to South Durras. Fish mostly caught include whiting, salmon, tailor, bream and snapper. A high level of skill and dexterity is required to catch them. When Durras Lake is open to the ocean, it is not possible to walk from the north to southern end of the beach.

Point Upright Rock Platform fishing. This is located at the far end of Durras Beach. It is possible to catch snapper, salmon, drummer and many other species off the rock platform at the base of Point Upright. Rock fishing can be extremely dangerous and only experienced persons should indulge in this form of fishing. Proper footwear is essential along with an understanding of tides and weather. Guide to Garage Door Opener Repair

Safety always comes first – this is non-negotiable. That is why garage door openers have evolved from merely serving as protection for our vehicles against the elements to providing safety from security threats to life and property. As an indispensable part of our life, we cannot afford to ignore obvious signs of wear and tear in our garage door openers and attend to it only when it stops working. We need them in tip-top shape 24/7.

In chain-driven garage door openers, one of the tell-tale signs of an impending repair would be worn-out plastic gears. Repairing these is quiet easy only takes a short while with some household tools, and is easy-on-the-pocket too. Plus, you get to prevent possible damage to other garage door components which usually happens when simple repairs like this is ignored. Below are the step-by-step of changing those plastic gears.

Preparing for the Repair

As in all electric appliances, make sure your door opener is not plugged in. Use the emergency release lever to close the door manually. Take off the cover of your garage door opener.

Checking Nylon Gear for Signs of Wear and Tear

If the plastic or nylon gear has worn edges, they are screaming for replacement. Calling your manufacturer first for the replacement part would be the safest thing to do as they can provide you with the spare part matched to your garage door openers make and model. If they are unable to help, shop online for it. The web offers wide choices of garage door openers at affordable price ranges. If you want it faster and simpler, then just make a quick stop at your local store. Once you find the appropriate gear kit for your door opener, (note: a gear kit provides a couple of nylon gears and comes with some washers, a grease tube along with an instructional) you are ready for the job.

Get Your Tools Ready

Replacing the gear usually requires the following tools; a hammer, flathead screwdriver, ¼ inch, 3/8 inch and 5/16 inch nut drivers or sockets, 1/8 inch Allen wrench and 5/32 inch punch. With everything organized, you can now do a handyman’s job:

Carefully free the circuit board by taking screws off and letting the board dangle. It will give you more work space.

The chain on the tensioning rod also needs to be out of your way. To loosen it, with a wrench, work on the nut on the rod while holding the chain in place with a pair of pliers or another wrench.

Now you can unscrew and remove the gear assembly out of the unit.

Then to separate the helical gear from the shaft, use the hammer and lightly tap on the pin keeping in its place. If this does not work, apply some WD-40 on the pin and leave it for a few seconds then try again.

Using a hex wrench, attempt to detach the worm gear from the motor shaft by removing the screws on the collar. Take off the gears and washers and remove the remaining screws on the motor.

Now you are ready for reassembly. Reassemble the worm gear and motor shaft using the new worm gear. Put in place the new helical gear and apply a small amount of grease on it.

After the replacement, consult your manual for directions on tightening back the chain and do so. Put back the cover of the door opener

Enjoy your newly repaired door opener.

When to Seek Professional Help

Should you find no obvious damage to parts upon your inspection, it might be time to hire a professional for a more thorough check-up. Bear in mind, though, that the cost of hiring a professional might just be at par with the price of some brand new garage door openers. That being the case, use your better judgment. Now you are ready for reassembly. Reassemble the worm gear and motor shaft using the new worm gear. Put in place the new helical gear and apply a small amount of grease on it.

After the replacement, consult your manual for directions on tightening back the chain and do so. Put back the cover of the door opener
